About

A warm welcome to you, if such is possible in this context. We are Rory and David Hoipkemier, late of East Lansing, MI, two aging Catholic boomers, who have decided to go a different way. Our blog name is something of a joke, to be read with tongue firmly in cheek. We are not actually retiring, though by some measures we might be eligible. Rather, we have signed up as volunteers with the Canossian sisters (VOICA) and will teach English in Timor-Leste for the next two years. This blog is intended to chronicle this exciting (and daunting) journey, and hopefully, help all of us to live with more awareness, hope, and love.

Hi, thanks for creating this blog. Stumbled upon it during my search for maps of Timor Leste to use for my class of 5 year olds at an international school in Dili. It’s late and I must sleep so I have the energy necessary to teach very active little guys tomorrow, so I haven’t had the chance to explore your blog in depth. But I look forward to reading your posts when I get the chance. Keep up the great work! Wish you well with your teaching endeavors.

    Hi also Rory and David
I also have stumbled across this site and have just spent the last 2 hours trawling through your fascinating and descriptive posts. You make me ‘homesick’ for Timor!! Keep up the good work (and the posts!).
